Documentary movie on Timor Sea contamination wins 12 international awards

A documentary movie on Timor Sea pollution, entitled "A Crude Injustice," was nominated in 30 documentary film festivals worldwide and has won 12 international awards.

"Recently, the documentary was screened on George Street Sydney-Australia at the Sydney Indie Film Festival, and it won the best short documentary film category," Ferdi Tanoni said.
Kupang, E Nusa Tenggara (AntaraNews NTT) - A documentary movie on Timor Sea pollution, entitled "A Crude Injustice," was nominated in 30 documentary film festivals worldwide and has won 12 international awards.

"Recently, the documentary was screened on George Street Sydney-Australia at the Sydney Indie Film Festival, and it won the best short documentary film category," Chairman of the Advocacy Team for Timor Sea Pollution Victims, Ferdi Tanoni, told the press here on Wednesday.

He noted that "A Crude Injustice" was directed by Jane Hammond, an independent journalist from Perth, West Australia.

The Timor Sea pollution began on Aug 21, 2009, when an oil refinery belonging to Montara PTTEP Australasia in West Atlas Block in Timor Sea exploded.

Local fishermen and seaweed farmers in East Nusa Tenggara who are suffering due to the oil spill have carried out class action lawsuit to the Federal Court Sydney, Australia.

Tanoni, who is also the former Australian Immigration agent for eastern Indonesia, added that A Crude Injustice has been screened in more than 25 international documentary film festivals.

Some awards won by A Crude Injustice are an award at the 2017 Humanitarian Award of Distinction at the USA IndieFest Film Awards festival on February 15, 2018, and the Silver medal at the Mindfield Film Festival, Albuquerque, USA on October 14, 2017.

In addition, the movie also received an acknowledgment at the Independent Hollywood international documentary film festival in Los Angeles on March 24, 2018, and won an extraordinary award at "Docs Without Borders" festival in Delaware, US, in Oct 2017.

The documentary was also awarded as the Best Short Documentary Film at Clifton, Virginia, USA Film Festival, on Nov 10, 2017; the Best Director in Short Documentary Film at Clifton Film Festival, Virginia, US, on Nov 10, 2017; this Month`s Documentary at the Monthly Film Festival, Glasgow, UK, on Aug 31, 2017; the Platinum award at the Best Fly Short Film Festival in Los Angeles on Jan 15, 2018; and the Diamond Award for the best short documentary at the West Wing Film Festival in Los Angeles, US, on Jan 13, 2018.

Other awards won by the film are the Best Documentary Film at the International Filmstrip festival, Romania in December 2017; the Spirit Award at the WatchDog Documentary Film festival in Brisbane, Australia, on March 4, 2018; and the Best Documentary Film at the Sydney Indie Film Festival in October 2018.

Tanoni added that the film was also chosen and nominated in some of documentary film festivals, including WIIFA - Wolves Independent International Film Awards in Lithuania on Aug 25, 2017; Miami Independent Film Festival, US, on Aug 6, 2017; Sunchild International Environmental Festival in Armenia on Oct 13, 2017; Out of the Can Film Festival (as a finalist for the Best Documentary) in UK on Feb 23, 2018; and Peace on Earth Film Festival in Chicago, US, on March 10, 2018.

The documentary movie also was also nominated at SOMA Film Festival in New Jersey, US, on March 16, 2018; Colorado Environmental Film Festival - Golden Co. on Feb 22, 2018; Cinema Verde Film Festival in Florida, US, on Feb 8, 2018; and Irvine Film Festival California in US on Jan 26, 2018.

Some other awards that nominated the movie were Southern States Indie Fan Film Festival, Mississippi, US, in January 2018; Short Shutter of Texas Speed Film Festival in April 2018; Water Docs Film Festival in Toronto, Canada, from April 10 to 16, 2018; and Garifuna International Indigenous Film Festival in Santa Monica, US, on May 18, 2018.

In addition, the movie was also chosen at Kashmir International Film Festival in Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir on April 28, 2018; Hollywood Sun Awards Hollywood, US, in July 2018; and Melbourne Documentary Film Festival on July 14, 2018.
