Larantuka (Antara NTT) - Mingling with Catholic pilgrims, numerous Polish tourists were fascinated by the procession of the Holy Week, popularly known as "Semana Santa," in Larantuka, a town in the East Flores District in East Nusa Tenggara Province.

"This my second visit to Larantuka since 2002, and this time, I find that the sanctity of Semana Santa is still maintained until this day," Mikolaj, a Polish tourist, noted here on Saturday.

Mikolaj said that he along with six of his friends had joined the Good Friday procession, or "Sesta Vera," on Friday after participating in the Semana Santa a day earlier.

Almost six thousand Catholic pilgrims across Indonesia have congregated to celebrate Semana Santa in Larantuka with several European tourists, including those from Poland.

In Larantuka, Semana Santa, or the Holy Week, is the annual commemoration of the Passion of Jesus Christ, celebrated by Catholic religious brotherhoods and fraternities that perform penance processions on the streets of the town during the week immediately before Easter.

Every year, the week before Easter Sunday, the town of Larantuka, East Flores, solemnly celebrates the Holy Week, and this year, the series of prayers and processions take place on Apr 12-16.
