PUPR Ministry allocates water transport vessel for Komodo tourist area

Kupang, E Nusa Tenggara (AntaraNews NTT) - The Ministry of Public Works and People`s Housing (PUPR) has helped to procure a water transport vessel from Labuan Bajo, the capital of West Manggarai District, to support the needs of Komodo Island, Flores Island.

"Assistance in the form of a ship by the Ministry of PUPR has been budgeted for realization in 2018," Head of the Komodo National Park Budi Kurniawan stated here on Monday (28/5).

Kurniawan noted that the ship will be handed over and managed by the West Manggarai district government to cater to the needs of tourism and local communities.

He remarked that the water-carrying vessel will be allocated to transport water from Labuan Bajo City to the Komodo tourism area and to meet the needs of the local residents of the islands.

"This vessel aims to help meet the water requirements when the number of tourists visiting the area increases in the dry season," he stated.

He explained that the current supply of clean water, such as in Rinca Island and Komodo Island, still comes from the main water source in the area.

Furthermore, Kurniawan said he has also cooperated with the PUPR Ministry to build a drinking water supply system at two locations: Loh Buaya Rinca Island and Loh Liang Komodo Island. The development process is still awaiting the project auction in Jakarta to be realized in 2018.

He emphasized that the development of raw water infrastructure is an important focus for the development of tourism in the Komodo area in order to improve the quality and sustainability of water supply to meet the needs of tourists.

"Water is an important amenity for the supporters of tourism, so we remain focused on it, especially for the Komodo tourism destination that has been known worldwide," he added.
