Kupang (Antara NTT) - Agribusiness observer from the Kupang Nusa Cendana University Leta Rafael Levis said he appreciated Malaysia importing corn from Indonesia.
The chairman of the agricultural extension for East Nusa Tenggara was commenting on a statement by Agriculture Minister Amran Sulaiman said that Malaysia began to import corn from Indonesia.
Amran was quoted as saying that Malaysia started by importing 3 million tons of corn as a result of his talks with his Malaysian counterpart.
The minister said so far this year Indonesia has not imported corn, adding normally in the middle of year , there were many companies seeking to import corn. The country needs large supply of corn mainly for animal feed.
Leta Levis said the country has 180,825 hectares of corn fields, and East Nusa Tenggara is one of the largest corn producers with 43,940 hectares of corn plantations .
In 2016, East Nusa Tenggara was the country`s largest corn producing province, he said without giving figure.
There are two food production centers in the province - West and Central Flores for rice and Timor and Sumba for corn.
