Additional Ships to Facilitate Distribution Livecows from NTT

Livestock farmers in East Nusa Tenggara welcomed plan of the government to operate more vessels for the transport of cows from the province to other regions in the country mainly Java and Sumatra.
Kupang (Antara NTT) - Livestock farmers in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) welcomed plan of the government to operate more vessels for the transport of cows from the province to other regions in the country mainly Java and Sumatra.
"Additional cattle vessels will help facilitate sales of cows from NTT, but meanwhile. the province need to improve its cow trade system ," Director of PT Binusindo, Fabi Banase, told Antara news agency in Kupang on Friday.
The Transport Ministry plans to provide two more vessels for the transport of cows from the province.
NTT is the main supplier of live cow in the country and the government has encouraged expansion of livestock farms in the province to reduce dependence on imports for beef and live cows. Indonesia is still heavily dependent on imports for beef and live cows.
Fabi said cow trade system from the province is too long causing unnecessary loss to the traders and farmers.
"If the trade system is not improved , the additional ships would give no added value to the farmers and livestock traders," he said.
There is too much red tape in the procedure of inter-island trade of livestock, he said. Infrastructure does not help in improving the competitiveness of local products , he said.
Attempt to cut `dwelling time` by the government in various ports and the sea toll road concept is a concrete step to improve competitiveness of local products, he added.
The government has offered assistance and facility to boost beef production and expand livestock farms hoping to reduce dependence on imports and finally achieve self sufficiency in supply.
