S Timor Tengah, NTT (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo, popularly known as Jokowi, inaugurated the Temef Dam in South Timor Tengah, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), on Wednesday.

"In the last 10 years, the government has built four dams in NTT, one of which is the Temef Dam," he said.

The other three dams are Raknamo Dam in Kupang, Rotiklot Dam in Belu, and Napunggete Dam in Sikka.

Jokowi explained that the Temef Dam covers an area of 298 hectares and has a water capacity of 45 million cubic meters.

As the largest dam in NTT, it is expected to benefit farmers by supporting the cultivation of rice, corn, and other crops.

Jokowi noted that the dam will irrigate 4,500 hectares of rice fields in the districts of South Timor Tengah and North Timor Tengah.

He emphasized that the Temef Dam can help prevent flooding in the South Timor Tengah and Malaka districts, which frequently experience natural disasters.

Jokowi also mentioned that the dam, currently in the impoundment phase, was constructed with a budget of Rp2.7 trillion (approximately US$177.8 million).

He expressed hope that the dam would benefit all residents in the districts of South Timor Tengah, North Timor Tengah, and Malaka on Timor Island.

Jokowi is on a working visit to NTT, which began on Tuesday. On the first day, he inaugurated 27 road sections in Kupang City.

After inaugurating the Temef Dam, he is scheduled to visit the Napan border post in North Timor Tengah. He will also visit the districts of Alor and West Sumba on Sumba Island.
