The epicenter of the earthquake was located 57 kilometers (km) northeast of Waingapu, at a depth of 112 km, Chief of the Kupang Office of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Office Robert Owen Wahyu stated.

Gauging its epicenter and hypocenter depth, the quake was a medium-intensity one caused by the Indo-Australia plate subducting under the Eurasian plate. The earthquake did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami.

Wahyu has appealed to Waingapu residents to stay undeterred by rumors.
