Kupang (Antara NTT) - Major earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5 on the Richter scale jolted the district of Sumba Barat Daya, East Nusa Tenggara on Friday, but no report of casualty and damage.

The quake, with epicenter in the sea at a depth of 91 kilometers, around 59 kilometers northwest of Sumba Barat Daya, hit at 06.30 local time but not potential to trigger tsunami, Hasanuddin, head of the Kupang meteorology office said.

Tremors were also recorded almost in all areas of East Nusa Tenggara and West Nusa Tenggara and Bali including Denpasar.

An earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale in Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara Province, on Friday morning, was also felt in the provinces of West Nusa Tenggara and Bali.

National Disaster Management Agency Head of Data Information Sutopo Purwo Nugroho stated in a release received here on Friday that the tremor was felt by people in East Nusa Tenggara, West Nusa Tenggara, and Bali.

The Meteorology and Geophysics Office reported earlier that the powerful earthquake had jolted Sumba District in East Nusa Tenggara at 5.30 a.m. local time, but it did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located at 9.37 degrees southern latitude and 118.63 degrees eastern longitude at a depth of 91 km below sea level, or some 59 km southwest of Sumba District.
