"Currently, the only active radar base operating to monitor the airspace in the province is the 226 radar unit in Buraen, Kupang District, Timor Island," Colonel Moningka said.
Kupang (Antara NTT) - The Indonesian Air Force is building a new radar base in Kahale, Southwest Sumba, Sumba Island, to secure its airspace in East Nusa Tenggara, Kupang`s El Tari Air Base Commander Colonel Ronny Irianto Moningka stated.

"Currently, the only active radar base operating to monitor the airspace in the province is the 226 radar unit in Buraen, Kupang District, Timor Island," Colonel Moningka said here on Thursday.

He explained that the radar unit covers a section of the province`s airspace bordering Timor-Leste and Australia.

"The radar unit in Buraen detects threats arising from the south, and it has been integrated with the El Tari Airport radar and other airports in East Nusa Tenggara," he said.

According to Moningka, the new radar to be built in Southwest Sumba will be able to cover the entire airspace of East Nusa Tenggara Province.

"It is expected that within two years, the radar will already be in place, so that the entire airspace of East Nusa Tenggara will be monitored by the air defense radar," he said.

The new radar will reinforce airspace control and flight activities, and it will be integrated with 14 airports in East Nusa Tenggara.
