Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara (Antara NTT) - State Enterprises Minister Rini Soemarno has suggested that the presence of the Turkish 120MW-capacity Marine Vessel Power Plant will serve as the best possible solution to power shortages in East Nusa Tenggara.
"I think this Marine Vessel Power Plant will be able to overcome power shortages in Kupang and Timor Island in East Nusa Tenggara," the minister remarked here on Wednesday.
The mobile plant arrived in East Nusa Tenggara on Dec 16, and the local state electricity company, PLN, is attempting to install its network on the ship, with the hope that it will be able to meet the power supply needs in the province.
The vessel has been contracted by PLN for five years to increase the supply of electrical power on the island of Timor.
Meanwhile, East Nusa Tenggara Governor Frans Lebu Raya expressed hope last Wednesday that the Marine Vessel Power Plant would be operational before Christmas, but these plans fell through.
Further, the governor said the arrival of the plant would have a positive impact on the industry in the province, especially in the provincial city of Kupang, because of plans to build cement factory PT. Semen Kupang III and a steel plant, which will require a lot of electricity.
He noted that PT. Semen Kupang III will require 30 MW of electricity, which can be supplied by the Marine Vessel Power Plant.
"I would like to thank President Joko Widodo, who presented the vessel to the people of East Nusa Tenggara," the governor remarked.
According to him, the plant is a gift marking the occasion of the 58th anniversary of the province.
