Kupang, E Nusa Tenggara, (Antara NTT) - The East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Tourism office said it hopes to attract more tourists with 1.5 million visits this year, up from 930,000 in 2016.
"Last year, the number of visits was almost one million and this year we should be able to increase the number to 1.5 million," head of the tourism office Marius Ardu Jelamu said after a meeting here on Tuesday with officials of the state owned airport operator PT Angkasa Pura, the Association of Indonesian Hotels and Restaurants and the nation`s flag carrier Garuda Indonesia as a follow up of a stimulus package to back up direct flights by the airline between Kupang and other foreign cities.
Marius acknowledged that domestic tourists dominated visitors to the region making up more than 800,000 of the total number of visitors in 2016.
The regional administration and the central government have launched promotional campaigns to attract more foreign tourists totaling 15 million this year.
NTT also hopes to record an increase in the number of foreign tourists, Marius said.
Marius said one method of attracting more visitors is by issuing stimulus package for foreign tourists using charter flights. "The Tourism Ministry has been ready to support through stimulus package," he said.
