Kupang, E Nusa Tenggara (Antara NTT) - Thousands of Catholics in Kupang archdiocese in East Nusa Tenggara celebrated a mass service to mark the 72nd anniversary of the country`s independence on Thursday.

The solemn mass service at St Yosef Naikoten Church was led by Rev. Dagobertus Sota Ringgi, SVD. The national red-and-white flag was also flown in the church.

Catholics in the eastern region hold a mass service every year on the occasion of Independence Day. The atmosphere of independence was felt when the attendees sang songs of independence.

In his sermon, Dago reminded the Catholics of their obligation to pay tax as citizens of Indonesia, "so that development could progress fast." As followers of Jesus Christ, Catholics must be grateful as they are able to enjoy full freedom.

"God has given us freedom physically and spiritually," he stated, adding that the people should love the country for its diversity in terms of natural resources, cultures, local languages, religions, and tribes.

"Let us love each other fully without differences in terms of tribes and religions, as love is what sets us free," he remarked.
