Kupang (Antara NTT) - The Indonesian Military`s border security task force has foiled an attempt to smuggle fuel oil to Timor Leste from Mota`ain coast in Silawan village of Belu district.
Commander of the Indonesia-Timor Leste Raider 712/Wiratama battalion task force, Lieutenant Colonel Infantry Elvino Yudha Kurniawan said in a statement here on Tuesday that his team had foiled the smuggling of 1,275 liters of kerosene and 90 liters of diesel oil.
He stated that the patrolling team noticed suspicious activities while on duty along the Mota`ain beach on Sunday.
However, some suspects who pushed a cart toward the beach managed to flee when security personnel approached them. "They ran away and left behind the evidence," Elvino noted.
The kerosene was packed in 40 jerry cans with 25 liter capacity each, seven cans with 20 liter capacity, and 27 cans with 5 liter capacity.
The diesel oil was packed in 2 jerry cans with 35 liter capacity and 4 jerry cans with 5 liter capacity each.
The illegal fuel oil was seized and brought to Mota`ain border security post. According to Elvino, it was not the first attempt to smuggle fuel oil to Timor Leste.
He also called on villagers in the border area to avoid involvement in any illegal activities.
