Australian Manganese Company builds smelter in Kupang

Kupang, NTT (AntaraNews NTT) - PT. Gulf Mangan Group, a manganese company from Perth, Australia, has built a mangan smelter in the Bolok industrial estate, Bolok village, Kupang sub-district, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) province.

Acting NTT Governor Robert Simbolon told reporters in Kupang on Saturday (July 21) that the inauguration of the smelter was done on Friday (July 20).

"The smelter becomes the first premium manganese smelting and management center on Timor Island. The development of the smelter shows that NTT is a promising land," he remarked.

Simbolon explained that the company has been planning the licensing to build the newly inaugurated smelter since three years ago.

"This land can provide anyone who wants to trade, try, and establish a company. This area is an open area and is rich in natural resources potential. One of them is mangan, "he explained.

According to him, the manganese ores in NTT and surrounding areas were the highest in terms of commercial grade and with a 56 percent purity level of mangan.

Therefore, Robert further remarked that the presence of the smelter is very important to understand the content of other materials that exist in the manganese rock. He promised to guard the process of smelter development, so that it will not stop at the inauguration process of development.

Meanwhile, President Director of PT Mangan Group, Hamish Bohamman, revealed that the manganese production target in the first year was 30 thousand alloys. Later, in the next year, with the addition of a smelter machine, the production will reach 155 thousand alloys.

"Currently, two smelter machines from South Africa have arrived at Tenau port. We have signed cooperation with many companies holding manganese mining business license. We are ready to buy manganese ores regularly from the people of NTT, "he noted.

For the initial phase, the manganese processing will employ 80 workers from Bolok and Kupang villages.
